Gift Guide: Five charities to support this holiday season.

With the holiday season here and while we think of our friends and family and other personal relationships, the holidays are also a time to think of others besides ourselves. While thinking of creative gifts to give others, think of donating to a charity in the name of someone else (or yourself). You will be helping organizations continue to do great work, it always feels better to give than to receive. Check out a few organizations below who are helping across various demographics and platforms.

Put a smile on a child’s face.  The Monday Life  is an organization that focuses on  making the hospital patient environment more comfortable for children through music therapy, art therapy, technology and pet therapy (to name a few.) Their mission is to help hospitalized children feel better and healthy faster by improving the environments inside children’s hospitals. They are on a mission to make sure that every child “on the planet” does not feel lonely, bored or scared during their hospital stay. Who doesn’t want to put a smile on the face of a child. Check them out today!

Pay for someone’s college books for the semester. I had a chance to meet the founder of the Sun Gate Foundation and hear her story of triumph and surviving her human trafficking experience. She is now fighting to make sure that all survivors have an opportunity to better themselves and get an education. Sung Gate provides scholarships to survivors of trafficking to assist with their education goals. Sun Gate Foundation, a (501)(c)(3) non-profit, survivor-led organization based in Alexandria, Virginia. Sun Gate Foundation funds educational opportunities provided to survivors of Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking in the United States. The ultimate goal is to equip these young girls, boys, women, and men with a solid foundation to confidently go after their dreams.

United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women)

Help women on a global scale. The UN Women initiative supports women over a variety of areas, all over the world. Their work spans from ending violence against women to empowering women economically. I’ve been invited to and attended a few UN Women events in the past and have a true appreciation for the
work that they do to help women across the globe. They work towards:  elimination of discrimination against women and girls; empowerment of women; and achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Help a woman get back on her feet.  There have been moments for all of us where life happens. Many Americans are one pay check, hospital bill or circumstance away from being homeless or needing supplemental assistance. Calvary Women’s Services provides housing and several wrap around support services for women who are homeless. Programs at Calvary carry out a mission to achieve excellence in what they offer: a safe, caring place for tonight; support, hope and change for tomorrow.

The holidays are also a time to forgive, uplift and empower. Transition Solutions Enterprises (TSE) provides re-entry wrap around services for Veterans transitioning from incarceration and a safe and supportive place to develop skills, provide jobs and housing  TSE  is a charitable 501(c) (3)  dedicated to providing solutions for returning veterans and citizens from correctional facilities who are faced with the lack of employment and housing options.

Overall, these organizations are here because there is an obvious need and no matter which charities you decide to support, I hope you will support at least one this holiday season. There are so many great organizations doing wonderful work that need all the assistance they can get!

So Rubies, as the song goes, “put a little love in your heart…” and remember, no one compares to you!

Xoxo,

Maria
