New Queens on the block: New Miss District of Columbia USA and Teen USA crowned

There was a scent of nervousness,  glamour and girl power in the air at the Renaissance Hotel in Northwest Washington, DC on December 17, 2016. Where 27 women competed for the Miss District of Columbia USA and Miss District of Columbia Teen USA Crowns respectively.

The  lives of two young women changed forever that evening. Kara McCollough was crowned Miss District of Columbia USA 2017; while Karis Felton was crowned Miss District of Columbia Teen USA 2017!

The day was long for the contestants with preliminaries held earlier in the afternoon and the main event taking place in the evening. The choreographed opening number was quite fun and energetic and set the stage for the rest of the evening.

The current reigning Miss USA, Deshauna Barber, was in attendance for the special occasion as well. Having held the Miss DC USA 2016 title prior to vacating the DC throne for her recent National title; she shared words of encouragement with all of the contestants. Deshauna also honored two very special woman in the crowd; Army Veteran’s Kyra Davenport and Wendy Meyers. She praised the woman for their many years of service and commitment to the United States Military and ensured them they were loved and supported and reassured them both that their contributions would not be forgotten. Deshauna’s words truly resonated as she is active in the military herself!

The evening program consisted of the swim wear competition for Miss DC USA contestants and Fitness wear for Miss DC Teen USA Contestants.

The 2016 Title holders said their final good byes and walked down the runway one last time before the new Queens were crowned. It was especially bitter sweet to see Jasmine leave as we got to know each other during my Ruby Spotlight feature (check it out here). Both of these dynamic woman leave a legacy DC will never forget.

The Judges had a difficult decision to make that evening!

With this being a sisterhood it is no surprise that Miss DC USA and Teen USA former title holders came to show support for the newest member of their clubs Jasmine Jones and Dylan Murphy and to welcome Kara and Karis to the Miss DC/ Teen USA title holder circle.
