Recap: 59th Grammy Awards

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles on February 12, 2017. Although L.L. Cool J was not the host this year, the award show was pretty entertaining. I don’t know about you, but I like to watch the Grammy’s for the Fashion and the Performances. The wins and losses of the evening will always be debated because of all the amazing musical talent. Keep reading for a brief recap of the nearly 4-hour award show.

Adele opened up the show with a beautiful rendition of her 2016 hit song “Hello”. She represented for us curvy girls very beautifully. She looked absolutely stunning in her sequenced gown.

James Corden, most recognized from the Late show with James Corden and Carpool Karaoke, hosted the award show.

Performances and Wins.

It wouldn’t be the Grammy’s if Musical Performances weren’t sprinkled throughout the award show.

Beyonce performed two songs from her Lemonade Album. She wore a gold sequenced dress that showed and accentuated her very pregnant belly. She won two out of nine awards that she was nominated for.

The tribute to the Bee Gees was very entertaining including a musical mash-up by Demi Lovato, Tori Kelly, Little Big town, and Andra Day. They sang popular hits such as How deep is Your Love and Staying Alive to name a few.

A Tribe Called Quest had an awesome performance, blessing us with a jam up of a few of their past hits; while introducing us to songs from their newest album, We Got it From Here. Consequence and Busta Rhymes made an appearance on the stage as well. What was really moving was the special guests that also joined them on the stage, people from all races, backgrounds and religious beliefs. This politically charged performance was tastefully executed.

I was looking forward the Prince Tribute, ever since I heard the news that there was going to be one! The Time and Bruno Mars did NOT disappoint!! They honored Prince in such a beautiful and great way. I loved their performance! The Time began the musical tribute off and then Bruno Mars, dressed in his best Purple Rain ensemble did his thang. They sang a few of Prince’s hits to include: “Jungle Love”, “The Bird”, and “Let’s go Crazy” to name a couple.

Adele won huge last night for Record,  Album, and Song of the Year. She did, however, acknowledge that she thought Beyonce was also deserving of the Album of the Year award, which brought Beyonce to tears. I’m not sure why but it seems that an African American Artist has not won Album of the year since 1999. Prince, Beyonce, Kanye West, and Mariah Carey are among the few seasoned artist with an extensive catalog and significant contributions to the music industry who have not won the award. Thangs that make you go hmm…

Adele also sang a tribute to late great George Michael.

Chance the rapper was another huge winner of the evening, respectively for his genre and as an independent artist. He took home Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance and Rap Album of the year for his Gospel-  Rap Album, The Coloring Book. This does not come as a surprise, given his hard work over the years. He made sure to Thank God, his parents and his team for their assistance in getting him to this moment.  Chance the Rapper also performed during the Grammy’s and welcomed Gospel Recording Artist Tamela Mann and Kirk Franklin along with a Gospel Choir to share the stage with him.

I was entertained by the Grammys and glad to see much diversity  in musical genres and artists on the stage. Did you catch the Grammy’s yesterday? What was your favorite moment of the evening? Share below.
